Sibling Photography Sessions in Spokane: How to Capture the Bond Between Brothers and Sisters Before They Grow Up

There’s something about a photo of siblings that stops you cold. Two kids laughing so hard they can barely stand up. An older brother resting his chin on his little sister’s head. Twins making the exact same goofy face without even trying. These are the images families hang in their hallways, frame on their mantles, and pull out decades later when the kids have kids of their own.

If you’ve been thinking about booking a sibling portrait session in Spokane — or even just wondering if it’s worth it — this guide is for you. We’ll walk you through everything: what to expect, how to prepare your kids, the best locations in Eastern Washington, and how to book a session that actually captures the real relationship between your children.

Why Sibling Photography Is Worth Every Penny

Most parents think of family portraits as the whole-family thing: mom, dad, kids, maybe the dog. Sibling sessions are different. They zero in on one of the most important relationships your children will ever have — and one that changes faster than almost anything else in their lives.

Your kids are only this age once. The three-year gap between a seven-year-old and a four-year-old feels enormous right now, but blink and they’re both teenagers with their own lives, schedules, and friend groups. A sibling portrait session freezes a moment that can never be recreated — and gives your children something to look back on for the rest of their lives.

As a Spokane photographer who works with families across Eastern Washington, I see it happen in almost every session: siblings who arrive half-grumbling at each other leave with images that genuinely show how much they love each other. The camera catches what everyday life rushes past.

What a Sibling Portrait Session Looks Like in Spokane

The Vibe Is Playful, Not Stiff

Gone are the days of sitting-on-a-log portraits where everyone stares straight at the camera. Modern sibling sessions are active, natural, and fun. We play games. We have the older sibling chase the younger one. We let them whisper secrets or do a piggyback ride or race each other across a field.

The magic happens when kids forget there’s a camera at all — and that’s exactly what we’re going for.

Session Length

A typical sibling session runs 45 minutes to an hour. That’s usually plenty of time to capture a full range of moods: the smiles, the silliness, the quiet tender moments, and yes — sometimes even a real laugh that comes from actual sibling chaos. For larger sibling groups (three or more kids), we may run a little longer to make sure everyone gets their moment.

What’s Included

When you book a sibling session with Squeeky Door Productions, you’ll get a gallery of professionally edited images that you can download, print, and share. We’ll capture everything from wide environmental shots showing them together in a beautiful Spokane setting to tight close-ups that show every freckle and smile line.

Best Locations for Sibling Photos in Spokane

Eastern Washington is packed with stunning backdrops. Here are a few favorites that work especially well for sibling sessions.

Manito Park — The Duncan Garden and surrounding green spaces make for dreamy, lush portraits. Perfect for spring and early summer sessions when the flowers are in bloom.

Riverside State Park — The basalt cliffs, river views, and towering pines create dramatic, adventurous images. Great for siblings who have energy to burn.

High Drive Bluff — Incredible canyon rim views over the Spokane River. Ideal for golden hour sessions where the light turns everything warm and cinematic.

Finch Arboretum — Tall old-growth trees, winding paths, and creek crossings make this one of the most magical spots in Spokane for woodland portraits.

Kendall Yards — For families who love an urban vibe, the North Bank Trail gives you a cool, walkable city feel with the Spokane River in the background.

Green Bluff — If you want something rural and seasonal, the rolling countryside north of Spokane is breathtaking in summer and fall alike.

Don’t see a spot you love on this list? Bring it up when we connect. I shoot all over Eastern Washington and Spokane Valley, and I’m always open to a location that’s meaningful to your family.

How to Prepare Your Kids for a Sibling Photo Session

Here’s the honest truth: the more relaxed your kids are going in, the better the photos turn out. Here’s how to set them up for success.

Tell them it’s going to be fun, not formal. Kids who think they have to pose for an hour tense up immediately. Let them know they get to run around, play, and just hang out — the camera just happens to be there.

Don’t schedule during naptime or right before a meal. Tired, hungry kids are cranky kids. Book your session in the morning or early evening when energy levels are good and the light is beautiful.

Bring snacks. A granola bar in your bag can save a session. If things start to flag, a quick snack break resets everyone’s mood.

Let them have some input. Ask your kids where they’d like to have their photos taken, or let them pick one outfit piece. Kids who feel a little ownership over the session tend to cooperate a lot more enthusiastically.

Don’t stress the smiles. Some of the best sibling photos aren’t smiling ones — they’re the ones where two kids are deep in conversation, or cracking up at something only they understand, or just leaning against each other the way siblings do. Let it be real.

What to Wear for Sibling Portraits

You don’t have to match exactly — in fact, I’d recommend against identical outfits for most sessions. Instead, aim for a cohesive color palette with some variation in texture, pattern, and style.

Colors that photograph beautifully in Spokane: warm neutrals like cream, tan, rust, and olive; deep jewel tones like navy, burgundy, and forest green; and soft pastels all work well against Eastern Washington’s mix of pine forests, river views, and golden grass.

Avoid loud logos, busy neon patterns, or colors that clash. Solid or subtly patterned pieces almost always read better in photos.

Layers are your friend. A light jacket, denim shirt, or cozy cardigan gives the images visual texture and gives you something to shed if it warms up during the session.

Comfort matters most for kids. If your kids are itchy, stiff, or uncomfortable in their outfits, it shows in the photos. Choose things they can actually move in.

Sibling Sessions for Every Age and Stage

One of the most common questions I get is whether sibling sessions work when there’s a big age gap. The short answer is: absolutely yes.

Toddler and older child: Some of my favorite images come from this pairing. The older sibling gets to shine as the helper and protector, and toddlers are endlessly photogenic — their reactions are always genuine. We just have to be ready to move fast.

Elementary-age siblings: The sweet spot. Kids in the 5 to 12 range are old enough to follow simple direction, young enough to still be totally themselves, and at exactly the age when sibling bonds are most visible and vibrant.

Teens: Teenagers can feel awkward in front of the camera, but sibling sessions actually help with that — having a sibling there takes the pressure off. Some of the most stunning portraits I’ve shot have been of teenage siblings who clearly have a genuine friendship alongside the family bond.

Mixed ages: Big families with a spread from toddler to teen are totally doable. We’ll just plan a bit more time and build in some smaller groupings — just the little ones, just the older ones, then everyone together.

When to Book Your Sibling Session in Spokane

Spokane’s best outdoor photography conditions run from late spring through early fall — roughly May through October. The golden hour light in July and August is especially beautiful, and the natural landscape is at its most vibrant.

That said, I book up fast during peak season. If you’re reading this in summer and hoping to get something on the calendar before school starts, now is the time to reach out.

Fall sessions: If you’re thinking October portraits for holiday cards, book in August. The calendar fills quickly once families start planning for fall.

Winter sessions: Yes, winter sibling sessions are a thing. A session in Manito Park after a fresh snowfall or at Riverside State Park with the river mist rolling in can produce stunning, moody images unlike anything you’d get in summer.

A Note From Lay-Z

I started doing sibling sessions because I have siblings of my own, and I know what those old photos mean. The ones where my brother and I are absolutely losing it over some shared joke that nobody else even remembers. The ones where we’re just sitting together like it’s the most natural thing in the world — because it was.

Those photos aren’t just pretty. They’re evidence that we had each other. That’s what I want to give your family.

Spokane and Eastern Washington have some of the most beautiful natural backdrops in the Pacific Northwest, and there is nothing better than watching siblings just be themselves in the middle of it.
